Optimistic Parenting: Hope and Help for You and Your Challenging Child

Optimistic Parenting is written from the perspective of a clinician, but chronicles a lifetime of experience both as a father, behaviour analyst and psychologist. Durand is a leading authority in the area of autism spectrum disorders and is especially interested in challenging behaviour ranging from self-injury to aggression and tantrums.

This book is a very systematic approach for understanding a child’s behaviour, but also understanding the role parents play in that behaviour and the dance between them. Within the book, the claim is made that how a parent or caregiver approaches a challenging situation with their child can have significant implications for how that interaction is played out and a parents overall feeling of hopefulness and optimism is directly related to achieving best outcomes for their children.

Durand provides questionnaires for determining ones level of optimism and offers useful strategies for improving it. He is a strong advocate for parent health and understands the stress parents face and also the implications for parenting under duress and how to improve the parent-child dynamics.
