Daily Journal Activity

By POPARD

Daily Journal is another task that allows students to work independently using a Work System.

This task can be used as an adaptation of the journal or story writing task. Daily Journal is just one example of a storyboard that could be set up for a student. Other topics or even more open-ended templates can be used, with a variety of pictures to allow the student to fill in the content.

This activity is suitable for a pre-writing student. The template can be general, but the content and format of the pictures should be individuated to your students.

Materials you’ll need are:

  • Laminated colour-coded template depicting the writing frame.
  • Pictures or photos mounted on colour coded paper or Boardmaker® symbols with colour coding on background with Velcro fasteners

After teaching the activity using graduated practice and fading of prompts, the student can follow directions given in written and picture form available here and in the attachment below. By using Velcro to affix the pictures to the story board, the student will be able to hand in their complete journal entry when they are done. To save the journal – just take a digital photo or scan.

Work Systems allow a student to work independently in the classroom and eventually in work settings.
